We have a very small house and have started renovating on an extremely small budget. One of my biggest issues is with the cathedral ceilings in our tiny living room. I just can’t come up with any ideas on what to do with this space. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You could try painting one wall a diffrent color as a accent wall maybe hang a larg floral wreath on it

You could get long thin pictures and hang then to cover the empty space and bring the eye up. Since you're budget you could do something like this, cutting the shower curtain into strips about 18 inches wide and the full length of the curtain. That will give you long thin pictures.

  • What is your decorating style? You can find all kinds of great random large architectural pieces at swap meets, flea markets, etc. Something large and interesting. Would that interest you?

Hi. I love love crown molding, it's a high end look. The corners are a little tricky, unless your good with math (I'm not). Get a saw and miter saw box, easy pease. If you have lighting in the middle they also have medallions, there gorgeous. Go to your hardware store ask someone about these items they'll put you on the right track. If you don't have lighting in the middle but you gave a friend who stencils, theres beautiful designs for your ceiling.

Good luck have fun, I know it'll be beautiful. 🙂

Hi Cyndi! I have really high ceilings in my home too, and although they are beautiful, they are hard to decorate. One thing you might want to consider is how you can use furniture to your advantage. Adding your tallest pieces to that wall will naturally bring attention to that feature. Two tall bookcases on either side of your TV would be lovely. That would provide symmetry (which is nice in a small room) and also help bring the eye up. I know you are on a budget- you can find tall bookcases at thrift stores, ReStore, etc., very inexpensively, and then customize them to your taste. Good luck!

I don’t know what happened but I actually made a video of the room and it obviously didn’t work because there is just a picture. I do have large bookcases on either side of my TV just as you suggested but there is still so much empty space above it and the opposite wall is where the peeling hideous sectional is that I spoke of in a previous message so I have that wall to conquer too☹️! The room is so empty and boring! I am going to try and repost the video so that it is easier to see what I am dealing with. Thank you everyone for your ideas!

I originally took a video so that it was possible to see the amount of empty space I am trying to decorate but it didn’t post. Am going to try again and any other ideas for the “defiantly needs a makeover fireplace” are more than welcome!! BTW I am trying to achieve a “beach theme” to my home. This is the first room I need to tackle because it’s the first place you see and it is so unwelcoming. Look out for the super small boring kitchen that will be the next big challenge! I am so lucky to have such clever DYI people in this group otherwise I would be lost!

    Thanks for any suggestions!!

UPDATE: Cannot get the video to load so I am going to try to get a picture that shows most of the room. (Please pardon the mess, 4 pups, covers over the peeling couch ☹️ plus misc. stuff waiting to be picked up by UPS.)

You might lean a large painting on top of the bookcase and tall foliage on either side. I did this in my LR and it is very appealing. Simple and inexpensive!! Good luck.

Hi Cyndi! I looked at your pictures and was thinking about what I would do if that were my space. I would want to add a large piece of art centered on the wall above the tv. You can easily use a blanket or rug to hang for art. Also, if you are going for more of a light and beachy theme, you can buy some inexpensive baskets at thrift stores and store movies and smaller items in those.

Find an interesting material print (even a shower curtain) or even pieces of wallpaper. Fashion a frame around the outside. The taller the better
