Refinishing kitchen cabinets?
Hello Hometalkers!
How do I refinish/paint kitchen cabinets that were originally covered with a contact-paper like material? Underneath the paper, the wood is a little rough particle board-like material.
One of the enclosed pictures shows a corner of a cabinet where the paper cover is coming off.
Thanks!

I would peel off the rest of the contact paper, sand the particle-board smooth and paint it.

i'd do beadboard framed with moulding. although the picture attached isnt from my kitchen, it is what we did, and it turned out great! we used beadboard paneling framed with 1x3 inch fir moulding. we did a light grey-green stain wash that brought out the wood grain, and then we put on a coat of low sheen polyurethane for protection. they look fantastic! refacing was the way to go for us!
Valspar has paint that adheres to metal, plastic etc. I like the frame idea you are doing. It will keep the veneer in place and hide the peeling on the one door..I used the valspar on vinyl siding to freshen up the trim..it looks great, no peeling, been over 6 mos. Good luck..
Hello HomeTalkers. We decided to go with the shaker style trim and white cabinet paint. Here is a progress picture of the cabinets after adding the trim. They’re still uncaulked and unfinished.
