How do I redo my screened in porch?

I just bought my first house and have a screened in porch (my favorite room) that has no entrance/exit to the outside and is screen from top to bottom. It has a 'crawl space' under it. I would like to put an outside entrance, fix the screen holes and put a screen under the floor so bugs can't get in through there

  • You can get rolls of screen at most hardware stores. They come in different sizes you you will need to measure before you shop. Buy a screen door kit and install it, you will need to frame out an area to fit the door

Hi Anita. Congrats on the new home and Wow! busy, busy, busy. Okay, let's start.

Go to the hardware store and get the proper tools. It is important for a successful, relatively stress-free job to have what you need to get the job done right.

If there's multiple holes in all the screens, it's best to just replace them rather than trying to repair. Screening gets old and putting in new will last you for several years. Look to see how the screening is attached and take it down the opposite way it was put up. Save any wood used to cover staples, etc.

You will need to frame in for a door. Screen doors come in standard sizes and usually instructions. Happy DIY'ing! How to Screen In a Porch (and What to Know Before You Do) - Bob Vila How to Add Framing for a Wood Screen Door | eHow

Thanks! Definitely busy! LOL Great thought on getting new lasting longer if it was old, didn't put that in the equation - thank you! And thanks for the link!

Find an aluminum supply store their screen is better than the hardware stores. You will also need spline and the tool to put it in.

I will see if we have aluminum supply stores in our area. Thanks for the tip!

I’m not clear about putting screen under your porch to keep out bugs, but spraying under and around the foundation with a product such as Demon will eliminate most of them. When you replace your screen, cut it long enough to extend to the ground and bury the end to anchor it; or enclose your crawl space with lattice backed with screen. Good Luck.

Never thought about putting the screen all the way to the ground or enclosing the crawl space with screen backed lattice. Great idea! Thanks!
