Upcycled Ceramic Trivet - A Thrift Store Find

A few months ago I found a cute ceramic and iron trivet at my favorite thrift store. I didn't know right away how I'd use it, but it fit my list of "great find criteria", so it came home with me for just $4.

A few weeks ago I finally decided what to do with it!
Repurposed projects are my favorite, but sometimes a piece is already so nice that a simple upcycle will do.

(By the way, did you know there's a difference between the two? Check out this post for the details.)
A gorgeous stenciled design would really dress up this plain trivet, and I had the perfect one (visit the blog for a link to the source).

After removing the price tag and cleaning the tile, I centered and taped the stencil in place.
I wanted something more than just a basic painted design, and decided to create a textured finish instead by mixing the paint into a little modeling paste.

Tip: Modeling paste will dilute the color of your paint, so choose a shade darker than what you want your finished project to look like.
To apply the blend, use a metal pallet knife to spread it across the stencil, then scrape away the excess. You only need a thin layer.

This will take longer to dry than if you only painted it, so be sure to allow extra time. I set mine aside for 24 hours and it was thoroughly dry when I check it.
And that's all it took to update this plain ceramic trivet!
