How do I grow an Avocado from a pit?

I just did this for my Grandsons,

it took 6 months for the pit to crack open

and then start growing leaves.

Right now 2 months later I've planted it in soil

and have it near a grow light and it's grown

3 more sets of leaves.

Be patient and keep the water clean

and near the pit but not submerging it.

It can be done! I have grown quite a few over the years and have given away as gifts. My yard is too small for an avocado tree. Here is the method I used:

What zone are you in? Might not be conducive for growing avocados? They are originally native to Mexico in a tropical climate.

cut a cross on top of seed so it can sprout.

I wash mine and stick it into the ground - pointy side up, like your head. Most of mine grow, often in unexpected places since I forget where I'd planted them. I have a few inside that grow all year long and I let the ones outside die once frost comes. But there are always more next year. They do not bear fruit here in OR or many other areas but the foliage is pretty, mixed in with other flowers. I've had some take over a year before they decided to sprout.

They don't usually bear the first year.
