How can I create useful storage in this space?

Pour concrete patio everywhere there is gravel in the photo. Then build shelves in the metal building for storage, etc.
In the photo it looks like you have some type of roof over the area? If so, you could paint the metal and then hang some nice soft, billowy curtains in some areas. They wouldn't have to close. They could just hang there and look pretty! :) Good luck.
You could extend the concrete patio area, replace the round table and 2 chairs with multifunctional storage furniture like theses storage seating benches. If one is handy, those wooden storage bench seats could be handmade.
Here's some more storage options one could adapt to their own budget and space. That is a wooden homemade trash cans/bins hideaway storage area that's about 4ft. high and one could make it whatever width works for them. Could also be used for bike storage, garden tools, etc...the photo below is hinged bench storage.
