First do some serious declutering, like have a yard sale, donate or just pitch. Do one room at a time, set a goal to get rid of at least 25% or more. Organizing won't be so overwhelming.

Before I did anything get boxes and label trash, charity, keep. Then I would go through everything in that room and separate into correct box. When you finish that then you will have something to organize. Is this a laundry room/toy room or how are you going to use it? I need more information before I canenvision where to put things.

Before you get shelving, you need to sort and organize what goes where. Start by picking up all those items off of the floor. Dirty clothes go in laundry baskets or washing machine. If clean, then hang up or fold and put away in those dresser drawers.

What room is this anyway? A utility or laundry room, an extra "catch-all" room?

Why the TV, DVD. coffee table, dresser, mixed in with tons of bags, boxes, discarded clothing, shoes, pictures, books, a washing machine, and an assortment of many other items.

It seems like you need to sort what items goes into appropriate rooms or areas first.

Unfortunately, if you're living quarters are confined to one room, you still could organize the areas. Does the washer HAVE to be in that room? Is there a garage it can be moved and used there?

Also, here's no need to have 2 window coolers side by side taking up much needed space.

After you get organized, then place as many shelves as you can fit on

all of the walls. Good luck.

Is this an open floor plan? I would begin by moving everything in the proper room they belong so you can see what you have to work with in that room. Once you p!ave everything in place, we can begin on figuring out proper shelving for each room where needed.

I agree with all the above. If there's anyone else living in this house, they need to be trained to put their stuff up, not throw it in the floor! Somebody may need to become queen here and it looks like you're elected to sort it out and set rules about "put it up or lose it". (Stuff not appropriately put up will be confiscated for a period of time.) After you get stuff sorted, take the stuff you're keeping and make groups on the floor (i.e., throw pillows, books, etc.), then decide where those items can be placed. Also, could you get rid of the two space-hogging aquariums? Bear in mind that some sacrifices may have to be made to make this space functional. Lots of work to do here, but it could be a nice area. If I was there, I would love to help you organize. Love the dog!
