One of our trees fell leaving some exposed roots and a large hole that now has a lot of unwanted vegetation. Should we chainsaw everything to below ground level then fill with just dirt?

Depends on what kind of tree it was and if it was dead or alive before it fell down. If the tree was dead before it feel down, then remove as many roots as you can then fill in the hole.

However, if the tree was alive when it fell down, it might grow back from the roots. If you want the tree to come back, fill in the hole so no some gets hurt and see what happens. If the tree does not start to grow back in a year, then dig up as many roots as you can and refill the hole.

Epsom Salt procedure works great! I might add - after you get rid of the stump a concave hole might develop in years to come. Fill it with sand as needed even if grass is growing over the spot. The grass will eventually grow back over it. Another option after the stump is gone is to dump a lot of garden soil over it (making a bern) and plant flowers or shrubs. We planted Sago Palms in this situation once and it is lovely.

I save my dirt from potted plants, when the plants get to big for that pot, into a half barrell. Or when I dig a hole in the ground, it goes in the half barrell. I have filled several holes this way. Sprouts a problem? Go to your farm store. Ask for Tordon. I cut the young sprouts with a pruners, down to the ground, then spray. Read directions. Your sprouts in the picture, needs a chain saw. Good luck

Clean it out--rent a stump grinder. Clean out the hole and go get a pond kit. Make yourself a nice water feature.

Hire a stump grinder and make yourself a beautiful flower spot or cover the area w/dirt and sow grass. You may wish to replant a tree nearby also. Good luck!

Thirty plus years ago we felled a huge multi-trunk tree that bore pods of long, flat "fruit". It was damaging our sewer line. I still feel bad about it coming down but my ex did it behind my back. Anyway, after all the chopping and cutting of the tree the worse work happened, digging around the zillions of roots. Eventually, a root grinder company came in and ground most of the roots, that we had exposed, to shreds. I had a wonderful supply of wood shavings but will never forget the Majesty of that tree. The company charged me about $250 so consider the value for today, we also had dug for a few days to expose as much as possible. Later, we had the most unusual mushrooms pop-up here and there.
