Here is an easy decoration to set on your mantel or side tables or shelves for Christmas. It is also inexpensive to make. Who does not love red birds in the winter or at Christmas. You can feel free to decorate the "logs" any way you like after you build the "logs." These can be adapted to ANY holiday or special day.
First I found an old church hymnal and tore out 10 pages, rolled them into a log shape, taped them, and used paper glue to stack them 4, 3, 2, and 1 on top.
After removing 10 pages from the old discarded hymnal, I gathered various decorations and craft materials I had around the house: wire, ribbon of different sizes, a pine cone decoration, and paper glue. The pine cone decoration can be found with other wreath decorations for the holidays. I buy holiday decorations after January 1, on sale for 25 cents or less.
I rolled the "logs" and taped them to hold their shapes.
Then I stacked them like logs, added the pine cone decoration and some red rope decoration.
I used Christmas carols, but you can use any hymns or any pages you choose for your logs for the yule tide decoration. For teacher gifts, use the pages to an old classic book.
This photo shows the way I stacked and glued the "logs" together to resemble a wood pile.
What a pretty addition to the mantle for Christmas! I love the birds, especially red birds, at Christmas time. You could add more ribbon, holly berries and leaves, or a bird to match your holiday decoration. If you have mainly a "blue" theme, for example, you could use a blue bird on the "logs." These make great teacher gifts, Sunday school gifts, favorite aunt gifts, neighbor gifts etc. Children primary, pre-teen, or older can make them. They are a great activity for rainy or snowy days before the holidays.

what a beautiful Christmas idea/gift. I have several old song books that I got for small change at a flea market waiting for the right inspiration and you provided me with that. Love the bird but am already thinking of one with a poinsettia, one with a small crèche, whatever!!! So pretty and thank you for sharing.

I have lots of patterned card stock, 8 1/2 x 11, that I am thinking about trying to make the logs out of.
