I think the date pit should be planted the wide end down, if there hair on the date pit, that should go down. I would plant several date pits together, there are male & female date pits. I suspect you would want a Date Tree eventually.

I used a soup mug and tooth picks. Put the date pit on a table, put 3 toothpicks into the widest part of the pit, pick it up and put another toothpick on the table side. The toothpicks hold the pit upright by sitting on the rim of the cup. Fill the cup with 2 ounces of 7up or any other non caffeinated lemon lime pop and fill with water up to the toothpicks. Place in a sunny location, not direct sun. When the water gets low, fill again. I used distilled water. When the cup is full of roots, it can be placed in a pot with doil and in the sun. They make beautiful plants!
