How can I decorate this open doorway?

Hi there, As there is a wheelchair user in the home, I would leave it open, otherwise it could be very frustrating getting tied up in string or bead curtains etc...........

Maybe a valence to run across the top of the opening, it would give you a break in the flow between the two rooms, could put that in with a long tension rod.

Another thought would be a long strip of fabric centered over the top of the opening and tied back on the sides creating a tied back curtain effect.

I love the open concept! You can visually define the rooms with furniture placement and rugs. I'm not sure how your living space is laid out but you might try using a couple of chairs or even a sofa to define the living space from the kitchen.

I would put things on top to draw attention up there like a place to display a pretty shaped flower pot or basket roosters

As Kim stated about the open area. Take the open area a step farther and really open up the two rooms so that if you are in the kitchen you are still part of the living area. Great conversations happen in both areas. The kitchen is always inviting and the living area is relaxing.

a beaded doorway effect would look nice,

you can not do too much in the doorway , so as to leave room for the wheelchair, but the beads would give you a break, and give the space a little colour.

How about hanging some silver metal beads, that hang to the floor, on the left one third of the door opening? This would make a modern faux divider and still leave plenty of room for the wheelchair... You could still pull the beads out of the way by putting a little curtain thingy on the wall to tie them back when needed.

I also love your open space. The bead curtain idea I agree with John would surely be very annoying for somebody passing through in a wheel chair and I don't think it would go at all well with your contemporary decor. If it were me, I would consider hanging a lovely modern light fixture in the middle to break up the space if you really want to do so. There are so many great light fixtures to choose from, I am sure you would find something perfect for your home.

I already answered your post, but taking another look I wonder if you have considered sliding pocket doors? I believe they are quite inexpensive and would definitely divide the area up into to different rooms.

I still love the open space, though, and wish I had this myself.

Love open spaces. Valance, narrow drapes on side with a sash just for a visual look to soften the area. How about 2 hanging plants to soften & break up the area.

I also note that is NOT a load bearing wall so that you could take out the TOP part of the door way and leave the side walls to open it up.

I honestly think you don't need to divide the space at all. Open concept is what is popular and when you have guests over people tend to congregate in the kitchen where the food usually is. You have a beautiful clean kitchen and high ceilings. I would use that to your advantage and just create an overall welcoming feeling to the space. You could consider even opening the space up more since the wide doorway appears to be more for esthetics vs. function. If you removed the doorway you would have a very open, large spacious area that both rooms would benefit from.
