FREE Vintage Dresser recieves a Superior Paint Co. Shiplap Makeover!

It's so hard to pass up on free furniture... especially when you know if you don't take it home… it will probably end up in the landfill.

Here's the perfect example... come check out the transformation!
Here's the before photo - As you can see it needs some love.

*The drawers I have already removed*

Here's our game plan:

1. Remove the wheels
2. Remove the top and build a new top
3. Repair/fill the damaged body & drill new holes for new drawer pulls
4. Prime, Paint & Seal the body of the dresser
5. Stain and Seal the new top.

We removed the wheels, backing and the top.
Now time to clean!

My favorite cleaner for furniture refinishing is Saman TSP Eco and the 300 grit sanding pads - I've been using these products for 2 years now and LOVE it! No need to wear gloves if you don't want to... it wont hurt or dry out your hands.

HOT TOP: I also use this to clean my shower - it removes soap scum fast!

For one bucket of warm water you want to use one cap full of TSP Eco - It's super concentrated and will also help remove the stinky old dresser smell.icon
I filled the damage using Saman Wood Putty.
Here's the look I'm going for...

Here's the rest of the supplies I need for refinishing...

  1. 4 oz Saman Chocolate Wood Stain
  2. 16 oz Superior Paint Co, Base Coat (aka primer)
  3. 16 oz Superior Paint CO. Shiplap Chalk Paint
  4. 32 oz Saman Semi-Gloss Varnish
  5. Earlex HVLP Sprayer called the 6901 Spray Port
I applied one coat of Superior Paint Co. Base Coat (aka primer) using an HVLP Sprayer - The Earlex Spray Port

After the primer dried I gave the surface a light sanding with a 600 grit sanding pad.

HOT TIP: When HVLP Spraying I use the 1.5 needle and dilute the Base Coat with approx. 15% distilled water - basically the consistency of table cream
Here's one coat of Superior Paint Co. Shiplap Chalk Paint using our HVLP Sprayer - I diluted the paint with 15% Distilled Water.

I will let this dry for about 30 mins and give another VERY light sand with 600 grit sanding pad and apply one more light coat of Shiplap.

Yes...It's September 1st and... Yes, we have our fire on in the shop icon
Now time for Sealer...I love using Saman Water Based Varnish because its affordable and HVLP Sprays Beautifully!

Here I've HVLP sprayed 3 coats in our spray booth - please make sure to always use a respirator when using this product because it has higher VOC's then Superior Paint Co. Top Coat... If you are sensitive to chemicals please use Superior Top Coat instead of Saman.

I like to dilute the Saman Varnish with about 10% distilled water … You want the consistency of milk... not cream consistency like paint and primer. * I hope that makes sense icon *

Now when it comes to Spraying Varnish you can lay down a heavy wet coat on the flat surfaces but when it comes to vertical areas it's best to slowly build up your layers of sealer to prevent any runs.
Now time to build the new top... We used scrap reclaimed pine we had on hand.
We applied epoxy in all the knots and let cure overnight before sanding and trimming to size.
After sanding and trimming to size we added a bottom trim piece to give the look of a thicker top.
Here's a quick video of HVLP spraying the first coat of Saman Satin Varnish.

Once dry I applied a second coat and then gave a light sand with 1200 grit sanding pad. Then applied the third coat of Varnish.
Here's the after! I'm so happy with the transformation icon
I hope this transformation has inspired you to renew and upcycle your furniture!

Hi. I love this look. Could the same...or close.... look be achieved by brushing or rolling on the paints and ragging on the varnish?
