After buying our first home we had tons of projects planned , every room needed work to be brought out of the 1970's ! The kitchen got pushed to the back of the list ,

New cabinets and countertops would have to wait. I thought that I could do some quick , inexpensive update to hold me over.

Old kitchen

First I took off all the cabinet doors. Then I cleaned all the wood surfaces with Krud Kutter de glosser. This stuff is GREAT !!!

It not only cleans , but it gets rid of the shiny surfaces from oils , grease and polishes.

I HATED the scalloped edges on the door fronts . I bought a half sheet of beadboard from Lowe's. I measured the part of the door that I wanted to cover, then marked the beadboard . My husband cut it for me, then i glued it to the door fronts using lock tight super glue, then taped in place while it dried, so it wouldn't shift while drying.

Next step , time to paint ! I used advance paint from Benjamin Moore, it dries and cures like an enamel paint but brushes and hands wash off with soap and water .

*PLEASE NOTE : brushes and hands wash off fairly easily ONLY if you clean things right away , if you wait a little while , you will have to do some heavy duty scrubbing

** I DID NOT USE A COAT OF PRIMER **

I did 2 coats of paint , waiting for the 1st coat to dry , before starting the the 2nd coat. The guy at the paint store said to use a small foam roller, but even though this paint is self leveling, I didn't like the texture and switched to using a small brush.

Next step was to re hang the doors and put on the hardware, I was able to reuse the same handles . Looking so much better !

Next step..paint the countertops , yes , you can paint them !!! Again, I used Benjamin Moore's advance paint, in wrought iron.

To prep the counters I used Krud Kutter, then using a sanding sponge , I lightly scuffed the countertops. Using a damp cloth , I wiped off the counters and let them dry. For the countertops I used a primer ( also from Benjamin Moore )

First, then 2 coats of paint , waiting for the first coat to dry completely before starting the next coat. For painting the countertops

I used the small foam roller.

* I did not remove the sink , I just covered it and carefully taped around it.

Painted with primer first

Here's what it looked like after 2 coats of paint.

Hmmm...Now that my cabinets were painted white, it made the beige floor tiles look pink , yuk... I purchased a woodtone ( called silver spruce ) peel and stick vinyl floor planks off Amazon. My husband placed it down in the kitchen and entryway.

At this point the kitchen was really looking so much better for so little money , under

$300 !!! ( that includes the flooring and a new faucet )

* Lowes was having a big appliance sale ,

40% off , so we decided to get rid of the broken dishwasher and the mis matched appliances, and bought a GE refrigerator,

Double oven/stove & a dishwasher in the slate finish.(approx cost about $2000)

*This was not included in the re do cost !

The painting of the cabinets & countertops took 3 and a half days , the flooring took another day and a couple of hours to paint the inside chalkboards. Now it feels like a new kitchen !

So much brighter !!!

And view from another angle

Just an update ...

Just want to say that the paint on both the cabinets and countertops is holding up

Great !!!
