It depends how much you want to sand off but start with corse sand paper sand whole thing then get med sand paper then fine sand so you feel only smooth surface
Is it painted, bare wood, applied finish (varnish, poly, shellac, waxed etc)? What do you want the end look to be (painted, natural wood, distressed etc. )
The basics are to get yourself a sanding that fits comfortably in your. There are a lot of them for sale in the hardware stores. Try several on for size. Mimic your sanding moton repeatedly before buying. I can't recommend one over another, I made my own.
2) ALWAYS sand with the grain. If you want to see more grain, moisten the wood first.
3) Sandpaper ratings are a little backwards. The lower the number; the coarser the grit. Thus, a 40 or 60 grit is going to take off more than a 300-400 grit. Take a picture with you when go to the hardware store to buy the paper and ask the workER what they would recommend.
From here on out it's dependent on what final finish you want.
