I found this nasty looking rocking chair again at my favorite hang out. Good will.
$12. She was really dirty and the finish was all crackly looking . I think it is called alligatoring.
This is how she looked when I found her and dragged home.
Looked like it had been sitting in a shed or attic for along time
The legs were a mess

Here is the seat all cleaned up. I used Denatured Alcohol and steel wool to scrub it down. It literally melts off the old varnish and doesn't damage the patina . The center disk was actually made of a fiber board not leather so I was careful not to scrub too hard on that. The one arm had to be reglued . Some one tried but made a mess so I had to be careful scraping the old glue off.
This design looked like it was pressed in but when I got it cleaned up it was carved . I used my Dremel to get into the small spots.
Here is a close up of the seat It looks like leather but underneath you can see it some kind of very old fiber board.
And here she is all PERTY AGIN !!! It looks like there are several kinds of wood and I have no idea what.
Suggested materials:
  • Chair   (Goodwill)
  • Denatured alcohol   (Lowes)
  • Semi gloss polyurethane   (Had it on hand)
