How do I hide a diagonal space cut out of my bench top?

I replaced my gas cook top and the new one although slightly deeper wasn’t as wide. This has lef an open gap in my benchtop.
I’ve been thinking of putting some tiles over this gap but am unsure of where they should start and finish. Also any other ideas would be appreciated.
They make rubber fillers to go between your counter top and stove. I don't know where they are sold however. Not sure about the tiles.

You should be able to go under the cabinet the cooktop sits in and attach a support board from the front to the back. Then cut a piece of your bench top material wide and long enough to support the edge of your cooktop and attach that to the support board you put in place with screws that you countersink. Then fill the countersunk screw holes with wood putty and when dry sand and you should be ready to apply tile or whatever countertop material you plan on.
I agree with the support board that would attach underneath that will be glued and screwed in under the countertop. I would then glue the fill in board to the support board. A nice plain tile around the opening would be possible and the stove top could even rest on the tiles that are centered to provide an even looking row on each end of the top.
I would suggest you check with the company that sold you the cook top. Many companies sell filler strips that are meant for just this purpose.

Sensible point from Maureen. If you purchase a new laminate countertop from a reputable source, they will be able to properly cut the countertop to correctly fit this style of cooktop.
