I need a inexpensive way to put up a ceiling in a bedroom. That gets extremely hot. Despite central air and a portable ac unit

Horrible ceiling.

Looks like you could put drywall on the ceiling or some ship lap.

Lightweight foam tiles or beadboard. That is light and will cover large areas at a time. Seal the joints with caulking and paint or leave white as some of them are prepainted.

Sounds like you might need insulation. Or more insulation. I’d do that now even foam slice panels with reflective backing stapled up blocking the heat from coming down will conserve some energy. Get fancy later with all your savings from trying to keep it cool.

Insulate more. Drywall is very inexpensive.

Absolutely insulate. You can use foam board insulation sheets for easy installation. You need to move your hot/cold junction (in other words insulate more) or your ceiling will be water damaged in very short time by condensation. Drywall is cheap. So is wall board.

You could use cardboard and staple it

If you were ever to have a fire, and want to file an insurance claim, it will most likely be denied, as cardboard is not a code-approved building material.
