What do you think about countertop paint kits?

If you can afford new counters, do that. It is the best option. Next step down is paying a professional to special paint ("refinish") them. Last resort is doing it yourself. It works, but it is pretty tricky. As a property manager, we used the kits to temporarily fix damaged sections of counters, paid professionals to refinish them when they had a big seam (because tenants always get them wet and they warp there) and replaced them if they were getting crumbly.

Using the painting kits for countertops is just a temporary fix. They will look OK for a while but if you USE your kitchen it will just be a temporary fix. I would try the Rustoleum brand counter top kits if you decide to paint but I would also start saving for new counter tops!

I painted my countertops , without one of those kits. I plan on getting new cabinets and countertops in a few years, but wanted to cover my ugly fake butcher block ( running in the wrong direction ! ) formica countertops. I used Benjamin Moore advance paint and also their primer , they ran about $38 each , for a gallon container. I didn't even use half of it. You can see pictures on my hometalk post " kitchen re do from ugly 1970's to vintage cottage " it was easy , and so far 1 1\2 years later they are holding up well. Good luck !

I've read a lot of good things about Giani kits.

Be careful with Rustoleum! They offer these kits and recently recalled their satin black countertop paint for having a high percentage of lead. Just an FYI.

By all means if you can afford new countertops that's what you should do. That is what I would do. But if I needed a refresh or a color change until I could afford new, I might choose to paint them. If you are very artistic it will turn out nicely. Do your homework, check out the videos for the kits and go for it. Best wishes.

I have old melamine countertops, kitchen is 1970’s. So, I sanded them, after filling in any cracks or one burn area with wood filler. Vacuumed the dust and gave them a good primer. Then I used acrylic paint to do a granite look. Sealed them with non toxic resin. They look amazing and even the flooring man that came in to measure the floors thought they were real. It ended up costing only a few euros and really looks amazing. I have been asked to do two other people’s kitchen countertops now. It’s really fun to do and see the amazing change it makes in the look of the kitchen.

Painting Counter tops is super easy and fun! I will add a couple of pix of some counter tops done with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint.

Easy to do, here are the steps:

Clean with Dixie Belle White Lightning

Use Dixie Belle Slick Stick (you might need 2 coats)

Paint with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint/faux paint or stencil

Use Gator Hide for a beautiful finish!
