Any advice on finishing a low basement ceiling??

We have a very low basement ceiling, 6 feet mostly and even lower in some areas where duct work is located. Any advice on making the ceiling look higher?

6' is not much. If I were going to the expense of finishing off a basement, I would look to re-routing the ductwork across the back or one side of the area and then put up new sheetrock. It is better to have one section lower than the entire room.

We have a split level home and the duct work for the upstairs runs down the middle on one side of the load bearing wall. That area is a back foyer, a laundry room and a bathroom for the downstairs master. There is a dressing room and 2 walk in closets in the main area.

If you route the duct work near the windows on the outside wall, you can camouflage it by adding closets or bookshelves beside the window and putting a window seat nook under the window. That will draw the eye away from the low ceiling. In fact, if you put doors on the closets, no one will not know the ducts are there.

Then raise the ceiling where you can!

For budget friendly suggestion, light colors make any space appear larger so light wall color and white ceiling will help. Use table lamps, no hanging or pot lights, hang wall decor lower than you normally would to pull the sightline down and the ceiling will appear higher. Also, try smaller furnishings, an overstuffed sofa, recliner and large heavy furniture like a tall bookcase will make the ceiling appear low. The aspect is to draw the eye with focal points lower and use pops of bright color with decor. I hope this helps.

The appearance of height without expensive structural changes....hummm....let's face it.... it's a lowwww ceiling.

Paint is always the go to choice. You know the mantra..."paint it neutral and it visually disappears". I would try a light neutral color because a dark color on a low ceiling would be claustrophobic....and no basketball players allowed.
