How do I tear up old mosaic tile and lay down new?

Old fireplace has mosaic tile. I need to know how far to dig up the grout and how to replace it with new grout and tile.

You can get a tool to dig out the grout between the tiles. Then use a pry bar to force the tiles off. Once tile is off, you can remove the cement board. It is usually screwed down. Then you are ready to prep for your new material.
If your replacing the tile just hammer and chisel it off.
How do you know if the base (cement bar?) has to come up? There are a lot of cracks.
