How do I stick to one project at a time?

I start many projects, then move to another. How do I stay on course? So many good ideas.

  • When a project strikes in your head, write it down. Then stick with two or three at at time and see them through to completion. I do not have the luxury of space to have too many projects going at the same time, so it forces me to complete what I start.

Have an idea journal or notebook. Write it down, attach printed instructions, clippings from magazines or newspapers, or pamphlets you pick up for free in the craft store. That way you can flip through at your leisure and line up your future projects.

Perhaps you can try not purchasing any new materials for new projects until the former one is finished. It will be harder to start any new ones if you do not have the right or particular materials.

Thing is, I work at store where pallets and small containers etc, get thrown out and I hate to see waste.

  • Hi Donna,

I can definitely relate to this same problem. I struggle with completing a project 100% of what was on my list and I will probably struggle for this forever. For me I decide on what room I want to work on and then I set a budget for it as well as create a to do list of everything I want to do in the room. Then I mark what the priorities are to get done. The other stuff that isn't as important can get done later. Then I set a deadline and pencil in dates to complete the priorities. Having a deadline makes me more accountable. I have also considered having others' make me accountable to getting stuff done. Even with all this I still struggle. I hope this helps and good luck!

    • I struggle with internal accountability (if you want help with this check out Gretchen Rubin 4 tendencies. I am an obliger. Finding this out was life changing for me) anyhow perhaps ask a friend who also wants to work on her home and then you can keep each other accountable by talking weekly and brainstorming. Kind of like having an exercise buddy.

You might also try scheduling set amounts of time to work on each project so that you make progress on all of them. That, of course, assumes you don't have so many going that there aren't enough hours in the day! Not that any of us could relate to such a dilemma!

I keep a list and cannot have more than three things going at one time. It took a while, but it works.
