Upcycle those old flannels with this easy project!
Begin with an old, laundered and dried flannel shirt, pants, etc. You want to make sure you wash and dry to pre-shrink the fabric. If you ever want to wash your coasters, they will wrinkle and distort if the fabric is not pre-shrunk. Using a card stock template, cut two squares of flannel for each coaster.
I made my squares 4.25"X4.25". I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than this.
Cut felt squares that are slightly smaller than your flannel. You'll need one square of felt per coaster.
My felt squares were 3.75"3.75".
Sandwich one piece of felt in between two pieces of flannel. The flannel pieces should both be RIGHT side OUT.
Stitch by 'feeling' the edge of the felt inside. This is important because the fabric tends to "shift" but if you follow the felt edge, you'll have a nice, even square of stitching. Notice the uneven edges of the flannel.
Use pinking shears to even the edges of the coaster.
Now you'll quilt the coasters. Stitch from corner to corner. Turn and do opposite corners.
That's it! Finished - now wasn't that simple and quick!?
Wouldn't a stack of these make a fun, little gift for someone?
You could use other fabrics but you'll want to make sure they are thicker and stiffer. It's just nice to be able to use something you may already have laying around and turn it into a useful gift for yourself for someone else!
