You could go to Google Images, find one you like, and emulate it.

I agree, I hate grass and far prefer lower maintenance options. We put a platform deck up in our backyard and then pulled up all the grass around it in an "L" shape, put in landscape edging, laid weed-blocking landscaping fabric, and then laid a river rock over it. Here is a post I did detailing that process. We also have it around the HVAC unit and down to our garden beds. You can view the finished backyard here. It's so much cleaner looking, too. Also, we built two raised garden beds, and those got rid of some grass, too.

  • Look into Xeriscaping! Extremely popular where I live in Zone 9.

If you have a large yard, rent a sod remover for easiest way to get the grass up. Rather than dumping it, check with your neighbors--maybe they need some.

I live in Vegas and our water district actually has a garden you can visit to give people ideas for Xeriscaping. I would start with your water company and see if they have any ideas. Good luck.
