What type of paint are you going to use? If you paint/refinish with a tub & tile kit, waterproofing will be in the products you use.
Use a satin or high gloss paint so it beads and easy to wipe down after a shower.
We used Kilz primer aroma-free primer paint for ours. Be sure it says for indoor use and waterproof.
Rustoleum tub and tile paint is made specifically for this reason!
