I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.
Hi, Nancy: Ann's recommendation is the best. The cleaners that you can dip into take a lot of the silver with the tarnish! The same with the aluminum foil method. If you have silver and/or silver plated items you don't care a lot about, it is okay to use these quicker methods, but for the good stuff Wright's Silver Polish and time!
When I got married, I borrowed a ton of silver items that had been in storage. We lined the sink with aluminum foil then pour spic n span with warm water. When it was dissolved, we placed the pieces and let them soak. They came out beautifully with no damage to any of the pieces.
Having been in the cleaning business for 42 years and did silver cleaning I had found that Hagerty's silver cleaner was the best. It comes in a spray can which I like also non aerisal and a creme. The spray is quick and easy. This is also a polish and I found that it lasts up to 6 month to a year depending on the air around the silver.
Every time I clean my mirrors, they end up having tons of streaks and almost look worse than before I started. What could I use to clean them that won't leave streaks...

You really should use commercial silver polish - it also helps to resist tarnishing in the future. I recommend Wrights
