Apply to tiles, let sit for 15-20 mins. Wipe off with a wet, wrung out cloth . This was a formula given to me by a dentist for toothpaste (yes!) without using the wrung out cloth,

Try baking soda.
Depending what the stain or unknown substance is, try that Mr. Clean magic eraser. I have had great results in the past.
