I've been thinking of doing something like that myself and I know I'll be using spray paint because I love its ease of use, and there's no need for an applicator. With spray paint several very light coats is always the key, rather than one heavy one. Looking glass spray paint might look awesome.
I did this with ivy stencil around a large mirror in my vanity area...
Use acrylic paint -- like in the little plastic containers from Michaels or Walmart. Shake well. Put a bit on a paper or plastic plate. Take a sponge (they sell round sponges on dowels... they are cheap... in same dept as the craft paint.) Put only a tiny bit on the sponge and tap on some scrap paper... you want to get most of the paint off the sponge.
Now... you may sponge the stencil. Be gentle... and do not attempt to get every nook and cranny --- paint will run under the stencil and ruin your project!! (That is why you should NOT use spray paint!) ...a mottled look is ideal for stencils.
Good luck! Have fun!
For an opaque look, use regular craft paint- but be sure to seal it with polyurethane. For a more translucent look use glass paint- makes it look more like stained glass.
Of course, I would recommend Dixie Belle Paint!
I have used just plain little containers (Walmart or Michaels) of acrylic paint. Use a round sponge brush... and dab off the paint on paper towels before dabbing the stencil. (that sponge should be almost dry of paint... or it will leak under the stencil.)
