Can you install 4x4 or 6x6 supports? If so that would be sufficient to support the roof. Think of free standing buildings like a carport or gazebo.
What is the patio "floor" material? Does it go up to the house or is it away from the house?
It does go up to the house and it is concrete. I don't have a picture.
I have thought of using 6x6 posts and doing a type of "lean to" roof so rain only flows off of one end of it.

4x4 treated posts should be plenty for the support. Keep in mind the side near the house should be a little taller so rain or snow will not sit on roof. The pitch can be 4:12 if you just have some rain and I think this would be minimum. It must be steeper if you are having lots of snow.
