Using my cabinets to make a pantry?

My idea is to use the two upper and lower cabinets at the end of my kitchen to make a pantry. I thought if I removed the doors on upper and lower cabinets and use wood to extended the top cupboards out to meet the lower cupboards I could leave the counter top alone and just frame them out and add a door or two longer pull open doors. Has anyone ever done this and do you have pictures? My kitchen has one wall with upper and lower cabinets but we never use the end ones towards the wall. I thought make those cabinets into a pantry would be perfect . Ideas?

Hi Colleen. It sounds to me like you have it all worked out! The other option would be to not extend to upper cabinets and you have more of a furniture look, like the old breakfront cupboards.

I’m sorry I wasn’t clear, Colleen. What I was suggesting was not a new piece of furniture but rather, not extending the uppers. Simply place the on top of the lowers (with a very slight gap to ensure the doors open) attached flush with the wall to give the appearance of a piece of furniture. My apologies is I confused you.

  • I made a pantry by buying 4 upper cabinets at 24 inches wide and mounted them two on top attached to two on the bottom mounted on a base of about 3 inches high on the floor and fastened them to thee wall. Put clips on the inside of the doors so the upper and bottom ones open together. Then put two 24 inch wide by 15 inch high on top of that. Made a great shallow panty 48 in wide in my narrow kitchen.

Usually upper cabinets are not as deep as lower cabinets. This may present problems when trying to put them together.

  • the point was that I didn't want them to be deep as I find stuff gets lost in the back of the regular pantries...and I had no trouble just joining the doors together to open as one. And the area I had to fit them into was a little on the narrow side. It worked perfectly.
