Hi Cheryl! I've made several bird baths out of different repurposed items and the most important thing is that whatever bowl you use shouldn't be too deep. Also, if it's stainless it could get heated up by the sun so it should be kept in the shade. Find a base that you love and use exterior glue like Goop or E6000 to attach your bowl to the base. I hope this helps.

    Stainless would get too hot.

Both Kelli and Tuula are right that metal will heat up. A shaded area will take care of that. Good luck!

I would paint it; that would take care of the overheating problem. First spray it with a clear sealer, something that is for outdoor use. Then paint and then add a few coats of clear sealer.

If you're going for the stainless look, do that as yard art. For instance, wind chimes, metal flowers, etc. But the folks are right - just the stainless by itself will be too hot for a bird bath.

I don't think that paint would keep the heat away. Call a professional bird person before you start.
