Yes, you can install black out curtains over the window shades. Purchase the curtain rods of your choice and be sure to buy hardware that extends out from the wall enough so when you hang the curtains they fall out over the window shades.

  • Same way you hang any curtains. Install a rod that works with the curtains / drapes you have chosen.

This is easy. Just hang a separate curtain rod above and further from the window frame than the window shade brackets. I have both on all of my windows.

Here's a tip: If you bought curtains with grommets, overlap the last grommet of one panel with the first grommet of the next. This will help them not to separate when hanging (which would defeat the purpose of blackout curtains).

Not all curtains black out the sun or heat. They are made of a special fabric that does both. This is especially important if the drapes are hung where you have dark carpeting or rugs --- true blackout curtains will help prevent them from fading, not just prevent too much sun from entering the room.

Yes, it is possible to hang black-out panels on a window that already has window blinds or window shades. Are your blinds or shades mounted inside or outside/on top of the widow casing? If they are outside mount then the hard part will be finding hardware to project far enough and be strong enough in the centre of the window to support the panels without interfering with the functioning of the shade.
