How do I remove all the grass from my front yard?

My house faces North, and between the huge yew tree to the Southeast, and the garage to the West, half of the lawn only gets about 4 hours of sunlight a day in the summer and even less in the winter. I am tired of fertilizing and feeding and weeding and trying to get rid of all the moss. So, since I live in the Pacific NW, I want to put in a rain garden. First off, I have to get rid of the grass that does grow. What is the easiest method? I want it dead by Spring so I can start changing the yard.

You can rent a sod cutter to remove it. Hard work, so be prepared. Or just stop watering it and let it go natural. Or cover with black plastic from now till next spring. Or hire a service to remove for you.
You can cover it over with a tarp so that the sun, what little it gets, will not get to any grass. No watering, rain or light and it will eventually die off. Weigh the tarp down so that it does not move.
