Super Easy Valance

When it was time to makeover my daughter's bedroom, we dug into the Pottery Barn catalog for inspiration. While I was able to grab the bedding on sale, I wasn't willing to pay for full price the window treatments to match. So I made my own.

Fabric is a super easy way to transform and personalize any room. You can check out other ways I've used it here...and they can all be adapted to no sew DIYs.

For this valance, I started with a basic rod and chose a fabric that would match the bedding. You can peek at here if you'd like to see the whole room.

Next, I got to measuring. I didn't add much fabric to the width of the window ~ I left 2" inches extra for the rod projection, 2" for light gathers and 2" for seam allowance, because I'm a sloppy seamstress.

If you're neat you can use less.

Then I measured to see how long I wanted the valance and doubled that number and added 2" for seam allowance again.

I turned my fabric inside out and sewed the sides up, stopping about an inch and a half from the open end at the top.

This creates the rod pocket. Your pocket size will depend on your rod size. Next, I sewed the horizontal ends closed, creating a rectangle that had two holes at the top corners. I turned it inside out and threaded it onto the rod.

The last step was to dress it with the ribbons. I just looped a piece of ribbon around the valance and tied a bow to finish it off. That was that!
