Shirley...I would clean well and sand some then prime and paint or purchase paint with primer included but I understand chalk paint does not require sanding or priming. Annie Sloan has a good chalk paint. Good luck!
Usually you have to sand anything you paint or varnish, so I think at least a light sanding would not hurt and probably would help a lot.
I own a modern Farmhouse Prime shop where I do make my own Furniture I refurbish some but I also make and tableside tables Buffet tables when Mel stuff like that what I would do is take mineral spirits in a big bottle of it it's like 10:50 at Walmart and Dallas staying off as much as you can and that's really going to lighten it up I don't know if you said how light you wanted but it will lighten to where you'll have a lighter stain where you don't have to stain it again and you can just polyurethane it wait 3 hours and it was a 220 wipe it off polyurethane and again wait 3 hours and it was another 220 you might end up having to do it four times to get the glass or sign that you want now if you're going to whitewash it and you wanted something like that I would still mineral spirits because it is cheaper I mean you don't have to have a stripper and then I would stand it with a 150 electrical sander and then I would just mix half a can of white and other half with water! Either way I hope you get the results that you want good luck
