When can I cut back a Lilac tree?

It has gotten rather tall and needs to be cut back a bit. I have one limb that sticks outward and hard to mow around. I do cut off the sprouts coming from the bottom. It's more than 6 ft tall and has never been cut back at all.

Lilacs are very sturdy. It doesn't really matter when you cut it back. Any time you want to is good.
