Hi Ed, you right to want to get away from Round Up and there are all types of DIY recipes for weed killer that aren't really safe for our environment either. You're probably not going to want to hear this and it's not a popular answer, but the best weed killer is simply hand pulling weeds. Or, you could take a blow torch to them, just don't burn anything down. Good luck!

Yes Vinegar works well! Also you try laying down cardboard or newspaper over the weeded area and covering it with mulch. it will serve as an inexpensive and organic weed barrier.

If you are just spot treating here and there - try boiling water. Pour carefully not to burn yourself. Boiling water poured directly on the weeds kill them instantly.

If the weeds are in a flower bed or vegetable garden the mix up 1 gallon of vinegar and put 1 tablespoon of dish liquid in it and then spray on the weeds ONLY.

Depends on where and what. I love using boiling salt water on my walkways between the cracks. It keeps the weeds down and the ants away. Don’t use it around delicate plants though because the salt can dehydrate them as well. Be careful using vinegar around delicate plants as well, even though it’s mild, it is still an acid.

  • Boiling water; epsom salt followed by boiling water; vinegar. Or smother with newspaper, cardboard or landscape fabric then cover with mulch. Or just dig out. Each has its own use depending on location of weed or grass that you might need to get rid of.

Hot hot hot water on the roots is the best way to kill weeds. Just make sure there's no other plants close to the weed you don't want to kill.

  • Hi Ed - This is the most effective all-natural method that we use. It's even been featured by Hometalk. Good luck! Holly
