I see a chip but what are they made off? Doesn't look like wood, more like marble or stone!

Maybe you could chalp paint them, then put a carpet runner down the center to cover the chip

Looks to me as if someone has covered old steps with thin plywood and then painted them. I would look into new wooden step replacements at Lowe’s, homedepot or Menards. If you buy new tops that have the nicebullnose rounded front edge and stain them before you attach them and paint the rest with white satin oil base paint, I think you will be happy with your new stairway.

It looks like thick tile to me and the sides are really unusual. I wouldn't remove them. I'd put trim on the front edge. To make sure it doesn't become a tripping hazard you'll need to screw it down. To do that you'll need a drill bit designed to go through tile. All the big DIY lumber yards carry pre-made trim. They are L shaped made from wood and metal. The L shape will cover some of the chips.

The edge decorations look like someone used calking to fill in gaps. Careful use of a razor blade could clean that up. Then a little patch material to smooth out the transitions from tile to wood and new paint would clean it all up.

From what can be seen and what I can make out. Replace the broken / open spots. And use round molding for the edges.
