How can I rework my 1970's Kitchen ceiling?

How do I rework a 1970's style kitchen ceiling. I would like to keep my cabinets if possible. It's a small kitchen in our condo in Bradenton, Fl. It is plastic panels on a angled grid with florescent lighting. There is a ceiling fan in the center.

Check the panels to see if they are flat against the ceiling to be sure you are not dealing with a "drop ceiling" with open space for wiring, ductwork, etc. If it is flat, you might want to RIP it out and install something like beadboard panels, if you like that look. Another option would be to simply spackle any nail holes and just paint it.

Sounds like it is a drop ceiling. Remove on of the panels and see if there are and pipes or ductwork above it. If not you can remove the drop ceiling and patch any imperfections. From there you can can prime and paint, cover with anything you want.
Assuming you are talking a drop ceiling style... with metal grids that hold up ceiling tiles. You can remove the ceiling tiles, then, if metal grids are discolored etc. you can paint them in a nice satin finish paint to match your new tiles. It might take 2 coats. For new tiles, there are tons of beautiful styles to choose from ONLINE HERE! I've used both the acoustic style ones, (they work great but not so pretty) and the vintage looking faux pressed tin tiles.
