Can I trim a Boston fern?
Two years ago I had a boston fern on my porch that grew quite big. I brought it inside to overwinter. It survived inside, however made a huge mess with dropping leaves that I then had to clean up--ALL WINTER. ARGGG. I have another one this year that is big and was wondering if I could cut it back quite severely and then bring inside for the winter. Will it survive? HELP!!!!!

Hi, Christine: I think you could do that. I have a friend (this is North Texas) who has very large ferns on her wrap-around porch which she "trims" and puts in her greenhouse over the winter. I know she cuts off all the droopy fronds and lowers the top, but I'm not sure how severe she goes. I would give it a try - most anything to avoid a mess, I believe!!
