Hi Sherry! Are they already painted or stained? The steps are similar for either, but, it helps to know the finish you are painting over. First, cleaning the grease, dust and fingerprints with a product like Krud kutter. It's no judgement on your kitchen, because unless they are factory new they will have those things. You will want to strip and/or sand the current finish. Any sealer that is already on it will interfere with adhesion of the new paint. A good stain sealer will prevent bleed through of wood stain or old paint (or a stain). I prefer Kilz, which if you buy at a Home Depot or Lowe's you can request it to be tinted to the color you are going to paint, which will save you on the paint you're going to use. I mention this, because I haven't been able to get that done at places like Walmart when I've asked. Also, a good, knowledgeable person at the paint counter can be a huge help. When I recently bought paint for a new steel door, the person at the counter not only mixed my paint for me in a pretty yellow shade that I had found in the HGTV paint colors, and was able to mix a paint intended for metal doors. So they can be a big help! There are also specialty stores like Sherwin Williams where you can get help. Use a good quality paint, invest in dropclothes and set up your work area. Most people recommend removing the doors of the cabinets for this process. Be sure to use a good quality clear sealer to protect your hard work.

Sherry, the prep is not easy but many people think they can short-change the prep and add something on top to make the paint durable. Unfortunately, this doesn't work. A durable paint finish is actually due to the adhesion of the paint to the substrate. This is achieved through prep. Clean, sand, prime....

Make sure they are clean and dry. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint with 220 grit sandpaper or a green Scotch Brite pad.. Use a tack cloth or damp rag to remove dust after sanding. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, KILZ,or BIN and have it tinted to the color of the top coat. This will prevent dark or stained surfaces from showing through the top coat. Acrylic, or water base paints are low-fume and clean up easily with water. Alkyd, or oil-base, paints require good ventilation because the paint contains solvents that can irritate your lungs and make you feel sick. Alkyd options require mineral spirits for cleanup, but they provide a hard, durable paint finish. Whichever you use, buy the best-quality paint you can afford for a lasting kitchen cabinet finish. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
