Hi Diane! Painting the railing would be the cheapest way to update it. Choose a color that you love that matches your house to make it blend in. I would use spray paint because it would be faster than using a brush, but make sure to protect all areas that you don't want painted with drop sheets and more light coats is better than one heavy one to avoid drips. Hi Diane. I'm Cindy. I agree. Painting your railing would be an inexpensive way to update it. You could also use ivy to update the look. You could either put a real plant right next to the railing - OR - use an artificial plant that you could wind around the rails. Some plants that looks like ivy are: Boston Ivy, Cape Ivy, Coliseum, Devil's Ivy, and German Ivy. These plants will use your railing to grown on, in and out of the rails. Best wishes and good luck.

The spray paint would certainly work or you could roll it on which would go faster than a brush. Be sure and buy the correct paint. Ask at the paint counter. I would use oil base but the paint professionals at the store know best. The plants are a good idea too. Jasmine might be an option but their smell can be strong. Turning a negative into a positive you might end up liking those rails.

I think you are right I just might like them.

You can also block in the mail uprights with wood to make them bulkier and add contrast with the metal.
