How can I upgrade this rather drab electric fireplace?

I am planning on building a bigger hearth and maybe putting some tiles around the electric insert. Any suggestions? Here it is now, rather blah!

Tile or faux natural stone. There are some great and interesting stone patterns to choose from. This site gives a very basic idea of the different styles to pick from.

I would go to Lowe’s/Home Depot and get some of the wood appliqués to glue in the front in difference places. Then paint the whole thing white and maybe accent the appliqués with another color to match the rooms decor.

High heat paint. Larger mantle with decorations.

Thanks. I’m planning on using a bigger live edge board for the mantle. What do you think?

It’s not the fireplace, it’s the flame that matters. Old Papaw advice, when Mamaw was complaining about the wobbly fireplace. If you are not ready to tile yet, go ahead and give the fireplace and mantel one or two coats of white primer. If you have a color you have been wanting to try in that room, try it now! You can always paint over it. Paint the frame around the fireplace itself in an iron black. The whole piece has some interesting lines. I think a 1” line around all the seams would add some extra class to it. I would probably paint the top of the mantle black, also. Don’t seal the piece unless you fall in love with it. It will be easier to paint over. If you are ready to discard the wood part, please put it out where some other DIYer might get it. Best wishes, Helen! ☺️

Thanks. Taking all advice in consideration.
