The best way I have found to keep down dust is to

change your A/C and heater filters monthly.

  • Try "wet" dusting. Change or clean hvac filters once a month. Brush your pets at least weekly and wash their bedding and toys regularly.

filters will help a lot. Go through your house looking for cracks. If you can see light around a window or door then dust is getting in. Anywhere you can see light, caulk it.

Check vents, air ducts, and ceiling as well.

Agree with Kim above, you could also get your HVAC ducts cleaned if the house is excessively dusty.

I also keep a negative ion generator, Ionic Breeze, in my house to remove the dust, pollens, pet dander etc from the air. You just wipe the blades off when it gets dusty. no filters. I have allergies.

Then when I do dust, I use an electrostatically charged cloth or a Swiffer disposable duster from the Dollar Tree that removes the dust versus just brushing it into the air. My vacuum also has a Hepa filter to remove dust. Carpets can hold an excessive amount of dust. Shampooing rugs helps also. Curtains should also be washed at least twice a year.

Duct cleaning can work, changing furnace filter often (at least once a month) and vacuuming frequently also helps.
