How to paint a dining room table and chairs?

I have a dining room table that seats 6 and would like to paint the table and chairs. I need to know the best way to get started. Do I sand the whole thing? What is the best paint to use? How do I protect it after I have painted?

Thanks!

Hi Wendy! This depends on what type of paint or stain you decide to use on it, and there are so many options particularly if it real wood.

If staining it you will need to sand and strip it.

You could chose to chalk paint it, that wouldn't require sanding, and you could distress it.

And gel stain could possibly work too! I recently used this on a stained piece of wood instead of sanding and staining. i like how it turned out but it did require a long time to dry, roughly almost 3 days.

    Hope that helps!

If you choose to use chalk paint, you do not need to sand it, unless you have peeling present. Just clean the table, and paint with the chalk paint. (You can prime it first if your stain is dark. I often do this using Kilz Primer for Latex.)

After you have applied the number of coats to make it look the way you wish (I usually use 2 coats of chalk paint for optimal coverage.), you can then distress the edges, if you wish, or not.

You can then apply wax they sell for use over chalk paint (which you have to reapply each year), or use a polyvinyl sealer. I find it better to apply the sealer using a cloth, because you then avoid getting brush strokes. Dry and sand lightly between coats, and clean off sawdust entirely. Apply 2-3 coats of the Polyvinyl. Some people use polyurethane instead of polyvinyl. I don't know if there is an advantage to using one over the other.

Let us know how it turns out. Send pictures too, if you like.

If you use chalk paint you don't have to Sand it! Yay. Them when done you wax it with chalk paint wax. Very easy. No stripping or sanding etc.

You could also try milk paint, which doesn’t require sanding, either:
