I would recommend an enzyme-based cleaner. You can buy them on Amazon or in pet stores. They have something special in them that breaks down the cat urine. We got this one based on the good reviews, and we like it!

For soft surfaces, I scrub with a mixture of Awesome Orange or OxyClean and water and allow to dry. You can also try a paste of lemon juice and baking soda. For hard surfaces I pour scoopable kitty litter on it and allow it to sit for a while to soak up odors, then vacuum.

Blot the area with a cloth. Spray one part vinegar to one part water to neutralize the acid. If carpet, mix one teaspoon of mild nonbleach laundry detergent into 4 cups of water and apply to the stain. Rinse with water and press with cloth to absorb the moisture. Repeat until the spot is gone.
