Find their habitat. You may end up mowing your neighbors back field or moving some of the rocks off your bank. Snakes love the rocks and high grassy areas. It also might help to ID the type of snake. Some are harmless while others you definitely want to g rid of.

  • They are great for the garden, but if you have a lot of them, you must have a food source for them. They feast on rats, mice and bugs. See if these sites help.

I had a couple snakes that kept hanging out around & under my house & porch. They just wouldn't leave & stay away. I got some foaming wasp & hornet spray that would give some good spray distance & seems to linger longer except when rain & water washes it off ground & surfaces, but the snakes apparently don't like what I sprayed & periodically respray, they left & I haven't seen them or any evidence of them in several weeks now, including watching my hens' nests nearby & baby Chicks for them attempting to eat any of those. None have disappeared.

So far it's working & I consider it a relatively cheap remedy for some safety & peace of mind. I do remain vigilant & watchful though.

I have heard that placing a plastic owl in the area will deter them. They are fooled into thinking that the owl is waiting to eat them. I have not tried this as snakes are not a problem at our home, but it makes sense.

Snakes will not cross ammonia. My daughter had a problem with snakes coming into her house! I called everywhere and no one could answer, I finally called a neighbor whose son raised snakes. He said, "A snake will never cross ammonia". We put it all around the house every 3 weeks. Amazing, no more snakes.
