It can look good and last quite a long time if you are careful about not sitting hot pots on it or cutting on it. If it is sealed well it will last longer and look better. You do have to remember that it is a pained surface so needs to be treated as such. It is prone to chipping and scratches like any other painted surface.
I have an old kitchen with an ugly yellow Formica countertop. It's not in the budget for a new kitchen....so, any ideas to change the look would really be appreciated...

Use either Giani or RustOleum kit. Follow directions exactly and make sure you wear a respirator.
