How to replace broken cement walkway with stepping stone ?

Remove the cement, even out the dirt under it using a spade. Place stepping stones and pour sand over the stones. Sweep the sand off the stones to fill in between and around the stones. I put down weed barrier under mine to prevent volunteers.

A word of caution regarding the size of your stepping stones. I had this great idea of using giant ones -- about 18" in diameter and probably about 3" thick. As you can imagine, these are extremely heavy. They have been down about 13 years and are sinking into the ground, one already being ground level. I did not do any prep work because I didn't research the project -- just laid the stones down. I used one foot pavers in the back and they are holding up fine. Also, I laid the big ones in a meandering "whimsical" path, which I don't recommend either. Just lay them in a straight line and fairly close together. You might also check into polymer sand (I believe that's the name). It is used as Mona said, but when you wet it down, it hardens like concrete. Depends on how complicated you want your project to be. Good luck! One more thought -- could you use the broken pieces of concrete to make a flagstone-like walk? You need to remove the old concrete and start fresh with a sand base of at least 3 inches. Tamp it down well and be sure it is level and then lay your stone. Your last step, depending on the space between the stones, is to either put spreading plant in between or fill the cracks in with sand and dry concrete powder. This mix will prevent weeds and ants from coming through. You can purchase a reddi -made crack filler which has glue in it and works the same as the sand and concrete mix.
