Paint a wood floor & tile?

Photos would help. Different woods will take paint differently and show defects.

Without a picture, this is going to be a lot of information:

Do you want to refinish both the tile & the wood? Neither are worth working around? Whatever is in your kitchen is going to have to be carefully evaluated because the wear patterns in kitchens are the worst, in the House.

Generally soeaking, Solid colors of paint always “telescope” surface imperfections, so when you’re ready for paint, you’ll want a paint roller designed to emulate sponge painting. They’re about $8 at DIY stores & last years.

But paint is step 3.)

1.) Strip all sealers, wax, dirt from all of the flooring types. The wood will probably need mild sanding. Fill any big gouges or tile chips.

This process should be done in sections, otherwise you’ll not have use of your floors for 3-4 days, so I will digress to the Planning Stage.

2.) I’d Plan a giant tiled look or borders look. Take the entire rooms’ measurements and draw them on grid paper. Put the different flooring transitions on the graph paper, to scale. 1 square = 6” for example. Blow up a tile pattern with a copy machine to work with your scheme. Try to line up pattern breaks with flooring type transitions.

The other pic give you an idea of color ranges (contrast) and I wouldn’t even go that extreme.

3.) Clean with degreaser, Clean with TSP, rinse/dry, rinse /dry & prime/dry & then paint a big section the lightest color. Dry 2 hours with a gentle & then tape 3/4” blue painters tape where your new grout joints are. Cover the edges of the new paint with a taped down plastic drop cloth so they don’t get water on them from when you clean the next section.

Repeat steps above for next big section(s) until done. Dry all overnight. Do not walk on this with shoes or bare feet, only clean socks.

4.) With second darkest color roll in the different sections with the sponge roller. Hand dab with a sponge brush the corners & edges. Do it in a pattern, not one side of the room to the other. This is so when you take breaks, the unevenness looks planned. Do not remove the blue tape, it is to stay “grout” color. Let dry overnight, no shoes.

5.) Color 3, repeat Steps in 4, only lightly & step back and look at it, very frequently. You might want to rub it with a damp rag to blend and smooth it like marble. Let dry overnight. No shoes.

6.) Gently pull up the blue tape. If the paint pulls up too, then the floor wasn’t prepped enough. You’ll have to hand clean those areas again & I’d use rubbing alcohol if you don’t have denatured alcohol. Use a 1/2” brush & repaint the “grout line”.

7.) Clear coat everything with a deck grade low VOC polyurethane. It can be rolled on. Let dry 24 hours.

Personally, I’d re-tile everything. Tile can be cheaply purchased and the labor is the big cost. Don’t rent the tile saw until the last day when you do the cuts.

You can paint it but I would think long & hard before I painted a floor white or black. Both will show dust and dirt much more than you realize.

You can paint it but sand it first

Oh gosh yes, no black & white. My black & white picture is a Pattern Template with sequence numbers in the rectangles. The picture is a beige with taupe & brown tones over it.
