How to change the layout of your living room/family room?
We want to remove a wall between a formal living room and family room. Does anyone know of a software program that shows what it will look like and how we would best utilize the space? Thank you.

First you need to determine if the wall is load bearing or not.
There are a lot of software out there you can purchase. Here are some free software that are fairly good.

First you need to get a pro in there and tell you if it’s a bearing wall or not.
Small Portions of bearing walls can be removed cheaply, bigger sections require much more work and a local architect can tell you the cost thresholds that will be crossed, for each additional increase in beam-span and new column footings. A contractor will tell you what they think, but they can’t do drawings for Building Permits. Structural work must be permitted for your protection, of which I can further explain.
Good 3D software with furniture, lighting & wall & floor finishes is expensive. For the price of cheap software, you can have a interior designer (not decorator) do 3D CAD options for you. Or at least that’s what my firm would offer a client.
Can you work with graph paper & draw it to scale?
I would advise you to remember electrical outlets for things like table lamps for furniture not against a wall. As in you may need a floor outlet. Do you have a basement or Crawlspace?
Large rooms need functional conversation areas, which means L shaped of C shaped furniture arrangements. Also think about light switches being converted to 3 or 4 pole.
